This Is the Real Reason Why NFL Player Adrian Peterson Still Ended Up Broke Despite Earning Millions
Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson is considered to be one of the best players of his position to ever grace the National Football League’s field. And because of his skills, he’s been paid with hefty sums to play by various teams. His earnings are actually expected to reach the $100 million by the end of this year’s football season.
However, the 34-year-old player’s money is reportedly almost all gone. This is the reason why.
According to sources, the primary cause of the NFL star’s financial problems is his involvement in various legal battles during the past two years.
The first of three suits he’s faced is one that was filed against him in 2017 for allegedly defaulting on his $2.4 million loan. Taking out the large sum a year prior, Peterson reportedly stopped making payments after five months. In the end, he was ordered to produce $600,000, which would pay off the rest of his loan.
Meanwhile, the third lawsuit lodged against him seems to be the direct result of his ongoing financial struggles. Apparently, Peterson took a multi-million loan once again, this time for $5.2 million from a Pennsylvania lender.
The loan was allegedly taken out as a means to pay off prior debts he already owes. After the legal battle, the NFL star ended up with about $6.6 million in total to pay on his original $5.2 million loan after legal fees and interest are factored in.
Defending his client, Chase Carlson, Peterson’s lawyer, linked his struggles with his ‘trusting nature’. According to Carlson, the athlete ended up putting his trust in the wrong people and was taken advantage of by those he trusted. The lawyer, however, noted that he couldn’t divulge more details about Peterson’s affairs because of his client’s ongoing legal battles.
As of latest, the athlete has reportedly signed with the Washington Redskins during the offseason. The two-year contract entitles him to $5.03 million and an additional $1.5 million as a signing bonus. It’s worth noting though that he most likely won’t receive his salary until the season starts because NFL athletes don’t get paid offseason. In total, reports say that Peterson has earned $99.22 million over the course of his professional football career.
Before his troubles, Peterson began his football career with much promise. After playing for the University of Oklahoma, he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2007 NFL drafts. And after his first professional playing season, he was awarded as the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Another recognition he got was the MVP award at the NFL all-star game Pro Bowl. He also became the oldest running back to make the first team at the all-star game when he was 30 in 2015.
